At 2321 hours, the box was dropped for a reported house struck by lightning in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue in 28's area. Squad 23, staffed with 4, arrived as the fourth due engine company, and was placed into service with a back-up line from Engine 12. The initial alarm was dispatched as a possible lightning strike to the roof, and first arriving companies had smoke showing on the alpha side. Both handlines were utilized to extinguish fires in the walls and floor space, and 23 members operated extinguishing fire between the basement and first floor. Squad 23 returned to quarters about two hours after dispatch. This is the fourth working fire assignment in seven days for Newport members.
