Large Salvage Yard Fire in the First Due
Saturday, July 21, 2018

At 21:06 hours on Saturday, July 21, Engine 23 was alerted via the "red phone" to respond to Interstate 95 southbound, in the area of the sandbox, for an outside fire. Engine 23 (Hamm) responded with a crew of 5. After processing the incident notes, Assistant Chief Hamm directed the Engine to the Old Airport Road area. Once in the unit block, the crew noted a visibile smoke condition, and arrived to find approximately three large racks of vehicles burning in the 400 block of Old Airport Road. Upon arrival, the Engine crew went to work placing multiple handlines inservice, and the box alarm upgrade was then dispatched. Multiple companies from  New Castle County, Chester County, and Salem County operated onscene until the fire was placed under control approximately three hours later. Chief 23 and both Assistant Chiefs held command roles at the incident.
