At 1954 hours on Friday, December 28, an Engine Company response from Station 23 was dispatched on the residential fire assignment to a dwelling in the 200 block of Louis Lane (19) for the report of a television on fire after exploding. Squad 23 made the response with four. Rescue Engine 19 arrived with nothing evident, and upon investigation crews located major structural damage to the charlie and delta sides of the home. The damage was caused by an explosion from an unknown source. The Squad arrived third due, and stood by as the Rapid Intervention Team before being released by command. While returning to Newport, units were alerted for a vehicle in high water in the area of the Sheraton Hotel on Airport Road. Crews from 12 and 23 removed two from the water before clearing. Just after 2300 hours, the residential fire assignment was dispatched to the 1400 block of Faulkland Road in 16's. Rescue 23 responded immediately, staffed with 5, and arrived first with nothing evident. Crews found a small fire involving a water heater, and quickly extinguished the same with a water can. The company handled five other calls for service on the day, including two other box alarms, and a dumpster fire on Old Airport Road.
