On the above date just before 0500hrs, Station 23 was alerted to assist Christiana Fire company on a "working" residential structure fire. Rescue Engine 23 with a crew of 4 under the command of Deputy Chief Lindell quickly responded. Engine 12 arrived, and reported a 2 1/2 story frame dwelling with heavy fire conditions throughout. Rescue Engine 23 arrived and went to work stretching the back up line to extinguish fire on the second floor. Due to the humidity and the large amount of overhaul required, this fire went to a second alarm before being placed under control. RE 23's crew assisted with the extensive overhaul operations before being released by command just before 0800hrs.
While returning from the fire in Christiana, NCC Fireboard sent Rescue Engine 23 to another "working" house fire in the Simonds Gardens section of Station 20's local. While units were responding, reports of burn victims being removed from the structure were received. Fire Chief 29 (Port Penn) arrived to find a single story middle of the row well involved with fire, and fire extending the attached units on either side. Rescue Engine 23 arrived, secured a water supply for themselves and Engine 18 and stretched a 1 3/4 hand-line into the main fire building. The crew encountered high heat, and heavy fire conditions, but quickly darkened down the fire which had involved the whole residence. Before the fire was brought under control, it spread through the attic to several attached dwellings. Rescue Engine 23 operated for around 2 hours before being released by command. Special thanks to Delaware County PA, Engine 39 for covering the local during both fires.
